President Cyril Ramaphosa has fired Higher Education Minister Nkabane. Her axing follows months of controversy over the Sector Education and Training Authorities Board appointments that saw several ANC-aligned individuals appointed. Her sacking also comes a day before she was set to appear before the Parliament’s Higher Education Committee to explain the SETA board appointment process after failing to appear in the last two committee meetings.
The new Minister Buti Manamela has been sworn in on the 22 July 2025. The swearing-in ceremony took place in Parliament before Deputy President Paul Mashatile and the Western Cape Judge.
Nkabane is likely to be summoned in the coming days by the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education that wants her still to account basically for the controversial appointment of an independent panel which she says recommended the people whose names were put forward to basically chair the CETAs. Nkabane was due to appear before the committee on the 22 July 2025, However, President Ramaphosa had decided to relieve her of her duties.
